Orion Chronicles: The Eye of the Storm

CHAPTER SIX (615 words)

Author's note: Helios’ undercover name is “Odysseus” and that is what the other Brekkens will call him. "Arrowhead" is his comm codename. However, for all intents and purposes, the “omniscient narrator” and Cara will still refer to him as “Helios.” Again, this story belongs to me - please do not reproduce without my permission or claim it as your own work.

Brekken Military Base, Terra V

Helios stalled for a moment, focusing on appearing calm and collected in the General's presence. He ran the tip of his tongue over his lower lip before dabbing at his mouth with a napkin.

“My compliments to the chef,” Helios said, “You’ve trained him well.”

“Yes, it’s amazing how motivating it is to see your tongue frying in cooking oil." Her eyes glittered as if she knew exactly what Helios was doing. "He spoke out of turn once too often, and now he doesn’t speak at all.”

Helios laughed as realistically as he could. “Very clever, General.”

“I thought so. Now,” she said as she leaned forward a little, “About that information…”

Helios nodded and leaned back in his chair, arms across his chest as he spoke. “I have in my possession a micro-disk detailing the location of two key Outcaster camps on Terra II as well as a list of possible Outcaster sympathizers among your own army. All I want in return is 1,000 zarets”

The General frowned. “My army? That’s impossible.”

“Didn’t you just terminate one of your own men recently for his disloyal behavior? A Colonel Thor, I believe?”

She laughed quietly, yet her eyes grew dark and serious. “You know a lot for someone I didn’t know existed until today. Some might say that’s highly suspicious.”

Helios reached into his pocket and took out the micro-disk, twirling it in his fingers. “True, but I know you're going to hear me out and give me a chance to prove myself. ”

“Really? And what makes you so sure?”

“Because I have information you want. It could do wonders for your military career if you captured two rebel camps and exposed the spies within the Brekken Empire." He held the micro-disk between two fingers and smiled coldly. "Besides, if you don’t take my offer, I’m sure one of your rival Generals will. Maybe General Augustus…he’s been trying to one up you for ages.”

Her eyes narrowed, but she smiled cattily. “Well-played, Odysseus…I think this is going to be the start of a beautiful relationship.” She stood up. “Come. I’ll give you a tour, and you can show me what you’ve got.”

Cara slowly peered around the corner, before moving stealthily down the hall until she came to a door. She let out a frustrated breath when she realized the door had a security lock. Suddenly she heard footsteps approaching around the corner. Cara quickly hid in the shadows, holding her breath with her heart clenching as she mentally willed the man not to turn around. He scanned his palm, and submitted to a full body scan before typing in his security code.

“Access granted.” The door opened, and the guard walked through. Cara quickly slid her shoe across the floor, where it came to rest between the door and the wall. The sensors kept the door from sliding completely shut long enough for Cara to sneak through, allowing the door to close behind her.

That was easy. A little too easy.

“Hey, you, what are you doing in here?” Cara whirled to her left, her body automatically going into defense mode. The guard she had followed through the door ran towards her and moved his hand to the laser gun strapped to his side. She lunged, kicking the gun out of his hand, and followed quickly with a jab to his temple, sending him reeling to the wall where he slid down unconscious. She tied him up with the leather rope from her ponytail and gagged him with a piece of her shirt.

Now to find a computer and Agent Hwang.

She moved quickly to one of the computer consoles against the wall. Bringing up a map of the military compound, she located the prison cells. Clicking on the prisoner manifest, Cara quickly scanned down the list. Hwang, Lani, Cellblock A, Section 5, Cell 24. Execution date pending. Yeah, sorry…not if I have anything to say about it.

That was the last thing she saw before she felt a jolt of white hot pain shoot through her body and everything went black. Oh…crap…
