He lost Louisa at the end of season 4 (Magog attack), thought his family had been killed (by Magog), almost died himself (Magog again), lost most of the crew, and was stuck on Seefra for a while before anyone showed up. On top of all that, he developed a drinking habit and a lack of hygiene.
